District Health Department offers breastfeeding support for Alpena and Montmorency mothers

ALPENA, MICH — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared August Breastfeeding Awareness Month, but it’s never too late to learn how to take the best possible care of your little one.

According to womenshealth.gov breastfeeding has numerous benefits: babies tend to get sick less, mothers recover from childbirth more quickly, and it’s free. That’s just to name a few. Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Heather Heath gives a few more reasons.

“It helps fight against different illnesses, such as colds, ear infections – which can help keep them out of the doctor, relieve hospitalizations.”

Another fact that may be surprising: mothers can get breastfeeding help and resources in Alpena. The District Health Department offers classes, information, and even has support groups set to start for Alpena and Montmorency residents. If you’re not a breastfeeding mom but still want to support the cause, you can join the breastfeeding coalition.

The coalition meets on odd- numbered months on the second Thursday. Breastfeeding support groups in Alpena will be held on the first Monday of the month starting October 7 and will last from 2 to 3 p.m. The group will meet on the campus of Alpena Community College in the Besser technical room.

Montmorency residents will meet on the fourth Monday of the month beginning October 28 at the Brush Creek Mill in Hillman.
