Researchers hypothesize that babies are able to signal their specific immune needs to their nursing parent by sending cues via their saliva.

When your baby latches onto your breasts to feed, an exchange of information is happening between your baby and your nipples.

Your baby exchanges backwash with your nipples. Your baby’s saliva flows upstream and sends information to your body.

This information communicates any sickness, illness or infection your baby might be experiencing.

Your body then takes the task of producing certain antibodies in your breastmilk to help your baby fight off sickness.

📌Breastmilk contains a small amount of infection-busting cells called leukocytes. When baby or YOU(yes you too!) are sick, the amount of leukocytes in your breastmilk spike in effort to heal and protect your baby.
📌Colostrum, which is the baby’s first form of milk, is high in leukocytes. It appears to be a yellow color tone. The same color effect can be seen taking place when your baby is sick and your body tailors special germ fighting milk.
