For the past fifty years Ireland has had the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe and almost the lowest rates in the world. These low rates have resulted in a complete lack of understanding of breastfeeding throughout the Irish culture; how it works and how very important it is for baby and mum. Only half of all Irish women will even attempt to breastfeed and those that do will approach breastfeeding with fear and anxiety and most give up within the first few weeks and overall breastfeeding is seen as a negative experience. I believe most of this is because of lack of understanding how breastfeeding works and lack of support. I know that when women are given good breastfeeding education before the baby arrives and skilled breastfeeding help afterwards they can breastfeed easily and with pleasure and joy!
In this film I want to show that breastfeeding can be a wonderfully positive experience and I hope that this film can start to change how we view breastfeeding in Ireland. Thank you so much to the fantastic mums and babies who volunteered to take part in the film; you truly truly make it!
