Mentor Mothers provide health, education and psychosocial support to other HIV-positive mothers on how they can best protect their babies from HIV infection, and keep themselves and their families healthy. That support encouraged Nokuthula Hung, a woman living with HIV in South Africa, to share the life-saving gift of breastfeeding with her infant.

Breast milk gives infants the nutrients they need for healthy development and protects them from common childhood illnesses, such as diarrhea and pneumonia. The World Health Organization recommends that a woman exclusively breastfeed during the first six months of her baby’s life. A woman living with HIV can also breastfeed, as long as she and her baby are taking their antiretroviral medication correctly. Together, breastfeeding and antiretrovirals can significantly improve an infant’s chances of surviving while remaining HIV-negative.
