Breastfeeding is the most natural and beneficial form of nutrition for a newborn baby however when babies are born pre-term, or when the mother has a very low milk supply, breastfeeding can be difficult and alternative methods of feeding breast milk is essential to gain the benefits of human milk.
Until now, very little basic research has been carried out on breastfeeding with most of our knowledge of the anatomy of the breast coming from artists drawings created in the 1840’s. Further, our understanding of milk removal from the breast by the baby was based on studies done in the 1950’s and 1980’s
Using ultrasound, Dr Donna Geddes, Senior Research Fellow at the School of Molecular Sciences, UWA is producing new knowledge on human lactation. Innovative products which, have been developed as a result of her research, have already empowered mothers as well as clinicians with tools to provide babies more breast milk and enhance breastfeeding and ultimately improving the long term health of babies worldwide.
