Breastfeeding is recognized as the ideal way to feed babies and young children. It provides the best nutrition for growth and development. It also plays an important role in preventing obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes, both highly prevalent in New Brunswick. However, attitudes toward breastfeeding in public vary widely. Public Health is partnering with a growing number of business and organizations to support mothers to feel comfortable to breastfeed whenever and wherever they choose. In February 2015, Public Health invited over a thousand restaurants to register as “Breastfeeding Friendly” and support mothers to feel comfortable to breastfeed in their establishment. With the support of Public health inspectors, the uptake by restaurant businesses is very promising.
