I could have missed out on our almost 5 year nursing relationship had I not remembered this trick I had learned about how to heal cracked nipples/prevent chaffing while still learning how to get a good latch.
Nipple pain is not “normal” with a good latch, but it can be common as you and your newborn learn how to initiate a deep, flared lip latch. This pain can often be the reason parents consider supplementing, just giving the nipple a bit of time to heal, which can sometimes start that formula top up cycle or a dependency on nipple shields (both of which have a time and place/are important resources for parents to have, but they might not always be necessary)
Pain, the top up trap, lack of support and misinformation about breastfeeding are the top reasons that they might end earlier than the parents had hoped. Let’s kick off this #WorldBreastfeedingWeek with some great advice, share your own tips or questions below and share this with a newly breastfeeding parent who might be able to use this routine to save their nips!
