The unique #Breastfeeding Buddies Support Group here at Madigan has been providing support to mothers for over a year, supporting active-duty moms to successful breastfeeding and pumping upon their return to duty.
Breastfeeding Buddies was started by Madigan Nurses Robyn Roche-Paul, RNC, BSN, IBCLC and Rachel Hinckley, RN, IBCLC to provide support for active-duty mothers and babies who choose to breastfeed. It consists of 8 scheduled appointments throughout the baby’s first year of life. The appointments are in a group setting with other moms that all delivered during the same week. There are two IBCLCs in attendance to provide weight checks and give accurate, evidenced-based information regarding how best to maintain breastfeeding while on active-duty. In the Breastfeeding Buddies Support Group, topics such as the Army policy on breastfeeding, dialog with a supervisor, finding a time and place to pump, how to manage pumping while in the field or out at the range, exposure to HAZMAT, and much more.
Moms are automatically booked for the first appointment after they deliver here at Madigan. If there are moms who wish to join and their babies are older, they can contact Madigan’s Breastfeeding (Lactation Consultant) Service at 253-968-2774. They can also contact Pediatrics Clinic Lactation Support at 253-968-1844.
