According to the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, 98% of infants are initiated to breastfeeding in the first one hour of life.
However, only 66% are exclusively breastfed for the first six months.
This is largely because many mothers have to get back to work not too long after giving birth; meaning that regular breastfeeding for six months is virtually impossible.
Few workplaces accord women breastfeeding spaces but Kampala’s Wandegeya market is different.
