Today it’s about being able to do a proper latch. I am not a breastfeeding consultant or breastfeeding specialist just a mom who learnt how to latch. Drop a comment if you have a question or are confused. Before we start find a comfortable position , you can grab a pillow or boppy pillow, put that on your lap where the baby will rest. It will seem difficult at first if it is your first time but keep trying don’t get discourage. First choose the breast you want to use. Remember you can alternate breast during feedings.
How to grab baby, put baby on your arm should be in a 90 degrees. Get baby closer to your chest by supporting his head . Hold your breast on her c shape or u shape. Do not hold the nipple. It’s the nipple and areola that you are introducing in the baby mouth. Grab the breast like you are able to squeeze it but you don’t. Your baby is on your arm . As you are getting your breast close to the baby mouth make sure your nipple touches the upper lip of the baby . Once the nipple touches the upper lip of the baby you will see the baby starting to open their mouth, then from the upper lip, slide down your breast to introduce it in the baby’s mouth. The baby should be drawn to the breast . So remember only the whole nipple and the areola are introduced into baby’s mouth. The baby should have his mouth wide open to receive your breast. He’ll draw your breast deep into his mouth. Your nipple will then be right at the back of his mouth, where the hard roof of his mouth gives way to the soft area. As soon as the breast it’s in the baby’s mouth the baby will start suction. They know how to from the moment they are born. You see the suction from the baby’s jaw. I Caution do not introduce the tip of the nipple into the baby’s mouth or you will be in great pain. Make sure the whole nipple it’s inside the baby’s mouth. Baby’s nostrils should be against your breast while your breastfeeding. Don’t worry the baby will be breathing. If the breast is inserted improperly , there will be no suction . Use one of your finger in the other hand that doesn’t support the head, insert inside the baby’s mouth to tap the roof of the mouth for the baby to release the suction , slide the nipple out of baby’s mouth and push the nipple out.
