No matter what latch and positioning look like, the true measure is in the answers to these two questions:
Is it effective?
Is it comfortable?
Even if latch and positioning look perfect (and, yes, even if a lactation consultant told you they were fine), pain (particularly after the first two weeks) and/or ineffective milk transfer indicate that something needs to change, and the first suspect is ineffective latch/positioning.
If baby is transferring milk and gaining weight well, and mom is not hurting, then latch and positioning are – by definition – good, even if they look nothing like the “textbook” latch and positioning that you’ve seen in books.

In this video, I talk about how my 5 month old has two bumps on his bottom lip and has them since a few days old. He doesn’t have a tongue tie or lip tie. I wondered if it was because I had a fast let down when he was small. I read that it could also be due to a shallow latch. He has never had a big mouthful of breast and whilst he wasn’t just on the nipple, he doesn’t have a super strong latch. I wondered if they were nursing blisters. But as he has not lost weight and is hitting all the milestones and the midwives and health visitors were never concerned it didn’t worry me. Also they aren’t giving him pain. I thought to make this for any parents who may have a baby with a similar lip.
