March 4: Breastfeeding Beyond 1 year
Raise your hand if you’re a breastfeeding mom who has breastfed beyond one year of age, or maybe you’re thinking of doing so. 🙋🏻♀️
Today’s Myth Monday is to tackle any myths associated with extended breastfeeding, and help you feel more comfortable! Breastfeeding beyond 1 year continues to support your child nutritionally, immunologically and psychologically.
Did you know…
🍎 Human milk after 12 months of age contains significantly higher levels of protein, lactoferrin, and Immunoglobulin A, in addition to the vitamins and nutrients still present
💪 Human milk after 12 months has significantly higher fat and energy contents
🌡 Toddlers who breastfed between 1 and 3 years old have been shown to get sick less, and when they do get sick, have a much shorter duration of illness
👫 Some studies have shown a correlation between extended breastfeeding and positive social and emotional development. It has been shown to allow children to reach independence at their own pace as well as form secure relationships
Again, please keep in mind this post is in no way meant to shame, guilt, or discourage a mother who chooses not to breastfeed, or breastfeed beyond the age of one. It is solely meant to support those who have decided to do so, especially when up against up some of the criticism they may receive! We all love our children and do what we feel is best… Whatever that is for you, high five Mama! 🙏🏻
Tune in next Monday as we bust more breastfeeding myths! 👊🏻
