Breastfeeding Uncovered: Meet April

April’s eyes light up when she talks about breastfeeding her 9-month old son, Patrick. After having her first two children at ages 16 and 19, April is having a truly unique mothering experience this time around. Ironically she is having her most supportive mothering experience at that one place most people dread—prison. Taking full responsibility for the poor choices that led to her incarceration, April centers her days at the Bedford Correctional Facility around the happiness she receives from breastfeeding and the bond she is creating with her son. “We are not our crimes,” April says, talking about the stigma of incarcerated mothers and defying societal assumptions about who deserves to breastfeed. For April, prison has been about her own rehabilitation and rewriting her motherhood journey.
