Savannah, a mother of three, is serving a 10-year sentence at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Bedford, NY. She is exclusively pumping for her six-month-old daughter who will be allowed to stay with her for 12 months thanks to a unique prison nursery program that keeps babies with mothers and provides extended breastfeeding and parenting support. Savannah breastfed her other children but didn’t think breastfeeding would be possible when she was incarcerated at two weeks pregnant, completely unaware that she was expecting. Now, she says pumping is like her “job,” and she takes it very seriously, pumping every three hours during the day without fail. “Breastfeeding makes me feel useful,” Savannah says.
